02-13-2010 Dr. Dog
Dr. Dog played the State Theater in State College, PA on 02-13-2010. Dr. Dog is out on tour road testing their new material on their yet-to-be-released album “Shame,Shame”. Dr. Dog are natives of Philadelphia, PA. The opening band was the Growlers from Los Angeles.
Dr. Dog has been one of those success stories that you love to read about. Hard working kids that grew up playing music together that constantly toured and honed their craft. Now, they are playing all the major markets and all the major festivals around the country including: Bonnaroo, Mountain Jam, and Sasquatch Festival this year which means their music will fall on hundreds of thousands of people this year alone.
After a week of tough winter weather conditions and getting cabin fever, someone needed to call a Dr. and thankfully Dr. Dog responded with a healthy dose of rock’n roll as the prescription. The packed theater was in great anticipation of Dr. Dog taking the stage and enjoyed the opening band, Growlers. Once Dr. Dog took the stage, no one on the floor sat in their seats. Dr. Dog has an infectious stage persona and their upbeat rhythms and 60′s psychedelic sounds keep everyone moving. The fans were dancing all up and down the aisles, and rocking out to the music these guys. A few times during the performance (as you will see in the photos), a member of the opening band came out on to the stage wearing a Joe Paterno mask which always got an applause!
Dr. Dog’s music is often compared to that of the Beach Boys mixed with the Beatles because their two and three part harmonies are really what set this band apart from their peers and gives them their own sound. The new album, “Shame, Shame”, is promised to be more like their live shows and their live shows are have been building their solid fanbase over the years. The live shows are more rocking and more soulful than listening to an album. Several of the people around me had taken the 4-hour trek from Philadelphia (Dr. Dog’s hometown) to see the show, that is the fan dedication that they are building.
The setlist for the night was as follows (if you know what the 3rd song was, let me know):
