10/17/2008 Toubab Krewe
The Toubab Krewe tour bus visited Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, PA on 10/17/2008 for a Toubab Tuesday as they put it. This has been a regular stop for Toubab Krewe tours for some time thanks to Round Table Presents. This is the second time I was able to photograph Toubab Krewe, the first time being in March 2008, click on bands to see the first set.
Toubab Krewe is an instrumental 5-piece band that has an astonishing original sound. A large part of their unique sound is the use of some atypical instruments for the American culture. The band utilizes a kamelengoni and a Kora which is actually made from a piece of fruit called calabash. Calabash (according to wiki) was one of the first crops grown to not be used as food but rather a container.
Their music blends surf rock with African beats played with African instruments. Their rhythms and melodies weave in and out accompanied with dynamic volume swells that make dance or at minimum nodding your head irresistible.
The band was excited to announce that their second album (a live album) was being released the next night. Talking to the band after the show, they were driving to New York City immediately after the show to rest up for the following night’s CD release party. I am excited to hear this new piece of music because like a lot of bands, they are 10 fold better live than their studio recordings.
Again, thanks to Round Table Presents for bringing unique and diverse bands to the intimate ABC Abbey Bar.
A great recording of the show can be heard here: http://www.archive.org/details/toubab2008-10-07.ksm109 This recording has great clarity and volume, a job very well done. Thank you taping community that makes these shows available.
